Lawrence Welk Would Be Cool Again Today

Actually, I'm pretty sure that he was never really cool, but he was an incredibly talented accordionist and band leader. My friend Benjamin Ickies, who was featured in a recent Times article about the reemergence of the accordion in contemporary music, is also an incredibly talented musician and orchestra leader (he's the musical director and creating all of the arrangements for our Beggar's Opera project) and is, I think, pretty cool.

I'm not sure Welk was cool, either -- but he was FAMOUS, and that's what counts in a culture that on any given day conjoins Barack Obama with Paris Hilton.

On an odd side note: I know Welk's old organist, Bob Ralston. Here's his website (because I know you're going to want to catch up): http://bobralston.com/
